David John Matthews was born on January 9, 1967. And, whatever amazing it may seem, right from the very beginning of his life touring became the way of his life.

After the boy was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, the family moved to a suburb of New York. Later they went to Cambridge, England. After a year in Europe, the family returned to the New York Suburb.

It was back in the USA when Dave, a 9 year old kid, took his first guitar lesson. However, as soon as they arrived in the States, Dave lost his father. This, and his mother’s anti-apartheid movement activist mood contributed much to Dave’s creative work as a singer and songwriter.

After a brief time in New York City, Dave returned back to Charlottesville, where he started to attend college but very soon understood that guitar and singing were his cup of tea. Exactly there, in C’Ville, he met his future band-members and it was in a local bar he first performed in public. That’s how Dave’s first steps to music were made.  In our further posts, we will discuss other bright facts from Dave Matthews’s shining career.

The Dave Matthews Band: Some History First

Posted by: Greg

Posted in: DMB

The Dave Matthews Band: CD14It all started in Virginia in early 1991, when vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews decided to record some songs he had written. He could have simply recorded himself with a guitar, but instead he found a drummer Carter Beauford and saxophonist LeRoi Moore, who were both perfect jazz musicians. All of them have created a music band called the Dave Matthews Band (or DMB for short). It is amazing that the first public performance of Dave Matthews Band occurred already in 1991 – at the City of Charlottesville’s Earth Day Festival.

The band’s first album was released on November 9, 1993, and was called Remember Two Things and was very well-received by the public.

During the first part of 1994, Dave Matthews Band recorded its RCA debut, Under The Table and Dreaming.

In 1996, DMB released their second RCA studio album Crash and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart. Then lots of touring, touring, touring… and finally on October 28, 1997, Bama Rags/RCA label released an official double-disc live Dave Matthews Band album, entitled Live at Red Rocks 8-15-95.

Almost each year the band steadily released a new album: Before These Crowded Streets in 1998, Live at Luther College: An Acoustic Performance by Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds – in 1999, Everyday – in 2001, Before These Crowded Streets – in 2002, The Central Park Concert and a couple of new solo projects – in 2003, 12.8.98 Centrum, Worcester, MA and 9.12.04 Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA – in 2004.

The year 2005 was especially significant for the band, because they launched their website to provide fans with videos and ongoing updates on the band’s progress.

Year 2006 was full of releases as well, including DMB Live Trax Vol.5, DMB Live Trax Vol. 6, DMB Live Trax Vol. 7, and the Best of What’s Around Vol.1.

The latest 2007 releases of DMB include DMB Live Trax Vol.8 and Vol.9 and DMB Live and Radio City.

Let’s wait what DMB prepares for us in the nearest future!
